A fishing excursion turned into tragedy late Saturday night after two men were swept over the reef at First Beach in Ipan, Talofofo.
Guam Fire Department command chief Mike Aguon, of search and rescue operations, said there were really four men involved and that a call was made sometime after 10 p.m.
One of them really came in on his own and hes the one I believe who made the call to 911. The other three were swept out and one made it over an hour later and were still looking for two, Aguon said as he looked out on the reef line.
Just beyond the surf that pounded the reef, rescue boats from the U.S. Coast Guard, GFD and Guam Police Department combed the waters. Above them, a Navy HSC-25 Seahawk helicopter hovered over and provided help from the air to look for any sign of the men.
The two who made it are Felix Torres, 18, and his brother Steven Torres, 20. The missing fishermen are Joseph Castro, 25 (a cousin of the Torres brothers) and their friend Evan Paulino, also 25. They all reside in Talofofo.
Yesterday close to 80 family members set up canopies on the shoreline and along the road fronting the beach watching rescue boats go up and down the reef area.
Felix, who was sitting with relatives on the shore, said he, his brother, Castro, and Paulino chose to go net fishing along the reef on Saturday.
We were doing fine but it came to a point when my cousin second guessed it and he questioned if we wanted to go in, but we were already nearly done stretching the net and all we had to do was chase the fish into the net, said Felix. He questioned if we wanted to go in and he looked at me. I told him no we should just end. As we got in further, it got a lot more hard to swim and one of our partners panicked and when he panicked thats where things (went) incorrect.
Felix said he and Steve tried to help their cousin, but their cousin went under. They believe he panicked. Steve was able to make it onto shore. But, Felix, Castro and Paulino were still in the water.
We all tried to swim in. When I looked back, Evan was standing and he looked fine. I questioned him if he needed my mask so I took off my mask to give it to him, but he said he was okay so I dropped my mask. The last thing I saw was the wave coming in and pretty much flipping Evan. The last thing I saw was his goggles and I didnt see him anymore, said Felix.
He then heard Castro yelling for help and tried to pull him in, but a wave hit them and separated the two.
A wave made him go under and that same wave pushed me back away from him and took me out of the channel. I was stranded out there for an hour but I managed to make it back in, he said.
Search and Rescue efforts finished when night fell. Aguon said they are going to start again today at first light.
