The five-member crew of the catamaran Pineapple is safe.
The catamaran was located yesterday at 1:30 p.m. after the husband of one of the missing boaters was contacted by his wife via cell phone.
The husband immediately called Rescue Coordination Center Guam and gave the Pineapples position in Leyte Gulf, Philippines.
The husband confirmed the vessel ran into terrible weather and suffered rudder and radio hurt. This delayed the Pineapples voyage but it was never in danger of sinking.
Bill Bullock, commodore of the Marianas Yacht Club, knows the people onboard the Pineapple and was glad to know they were safe.
They had rudder problems with the boat, but everyone is safe and sound. Thanks to the skipper, he must have thought of an alternative method to steering the boat and was able to bring it to safety, Bullock said.
When they were still sailing under their own sail power and they were in Leyte Bay, that person was able to call a family member on Guam.
They had plenty of drink and food. No one was injured, Bullock adds.
Two Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules aircraft, two Navy P-3 Orion aircraft, two Air Force C-12 aircraft, and the Coast Guard Cutter Sequoia searched more than 63 hours and covered approximately 122,600 square nautical miles in the Philippine Sea.
Rescue crews with the Philippine Coast Guard also aided in the search for the Pineapple. The Coast Guard also received help from the neighboring island nations of the Republic of Palau and the Federated States of Micronesia.
This was a tremendous international multi-service search effort that covered an expansive area of open ocean, said Capt. Thomas Sparks, U.S. Coast Guard Guam Sector Commander in a statement. Although we didnt find the Pineapple, reports indicate we were looking in exactly the right spot.
Although they are elated to know the crew is safe, Sparks said the boat didnt have any of the necessary items needed when the Pineapple set sail.
This voyage was made without taking basic, common-sense precautions. The vessel did not have long distance communications or emergency distress equipment, and a comprehensive float plot was not filed, Sparks said.
As a result, the families and friends experienced days of needless anxiety and hundreds of thousands of dollars were expended on search efforts that were potentially perilous for our service members and ultimately unnecessary, he added.
The Philippine Coast Guard is escorting the Pineapple crew to Cebu, Philippines, which is their final destination. The Coast Guard will conduct a post search and rescue briefing with the crew to determine the events surrounding this case.
