THE cash-strapped Commonwealth Utilities Corp. has hired Rose T. Ada-Hocogs Schobwuut Premier Consulting as its public information consultant.
[She] is helping us with public information responsibilities that we have allowed to go by the wayside, CUC Executive Director Abe Utu Malae said in an email.
He said Ada-Hocog, a former Saipan Cable and KMCV reporter and Department of Public Safety spokeswoman, participated in the CUC staff meeting on Friday. She started reporting for work on Wednesday.
We realized how much useful information needed to be sent to the media, Malae added.
He said Schobwuuts main responsibility is dissemination of information on customer service matters including water hours, ways to pay a bill as well as advance notice of outages.
He said Ada-Hocogs background and her ability to communicate in three languages will help CUC a lot.
We are excited to have someone of her caliber helping us, he added.
A member of the ruling Covenant Party, Ada-Hocog also worked for the Department of Labor as administrative hearing administrator, and the governors office as special assistant for programs and legislative review.
She served as secretary of a local citizens group called the NMI Indigenous Descents for Self-GovernmentIndigenous Rights, which opposed the federalization of local immigration.
In a separate interview, Ada-Hocog said her work for CUC is basic public information officer.
Ada-Hocog said CUC values its relationship with its customers and wants to ensure that they are well-informed about the operations of their public utilities company.
My company was hired to provide public relations and information services. I am positive that many will question the need for my services; but, I strongly believe, as a consumer myself, that they want to know how and where their hard earned dollars are being spent. It is my job to keep them informed, she said.
On Friday, she said she met with the management team and heard about some of the progress and issues that need to be addressed.
Today, Ada-Hocog said she will visit CUCs power plant in Lower Base to know its operation.
Her predecessor as CUC public information officer, former Saipan Cable reporter Pamela Mathis, resigned in Feb. 2008 after serving the utilities agency for 15 years.
