FRANKLIN Mafnas worked as waiter at Laolao Bay Golf Resort in Kagman and is now with its maintenance department.
He also worked as a driving range attendant and landscape maintainer.
œI delight in the work because I like to have more experience, Mafnas said.
Mafnas, who has been with Laolao for two years now, said the perception that local workers are unreliable is œincorrect.
Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council Chairman Ramon B. Camacho said Mafnas and other local residents working for the private sector œprove that our people are capable of doing the jobs of alien workers.
Camacho on Thursday met with other local workers of Laolao Bay. These include Robert Crisostimo, Paul Perry Santos, Francisco V. Cabrera, Jacob C. Lizama, Nick Muna Jr. and Jesus Taitano.
Margie Sasis, the resorts accountant, said most of their local workers œknow what theyre doing.
œThey do landscaping, lawn and golf course maintenance, ball mark repair and other related work, she said.
Their local workers, she added, are hard-working and punctual.
Those with the maintenance department usually report for work at 5 a.m., she said.
Vicente Concepcion, who is with the air-conditioning maintenance unit, said he œenjoys his work.
He encourages other local residents to study technical courses.
Two students from Kagman High School, Elizabeth Moded and Kaholani Hocog, are getting on-the-job training at Laolaos accounting office.
In his œcampaign to find private sector jobs for unemployed local residents, Camacho said he will continue to visit companies and establishments on island.
He said the municipal council is willing to conduct an orientation lecture on work ethics to help locals get jobs in the private sector.
The cash-strapped CNMI government, which pays high salaries and benefits, is the main employer of local residents.
