I cannot believe I live in a state where the character of the voters is so weak that they have elected a crook to the office of governor. The race was so close that a winner was not declared until this morning. The results showed that about 49% of Florida voters cast their vote for a known crook, and I dont mean just a small crook. In the world of crooks Rick Scott is a whale.
Tea Party-backed Rick Scott was the CEO of Columbia/HCA, which paid $1.7 billion in criminal and civil fines for Medicare fraud. His company pleaded guilty to 14 felony charges. Why he didnt go to jail is the question that thousands have questioned. Instead he walked away with a $300 million parachute.
Scott spent $73 to buy the governors seat with attack ads first against Former Congressman Bill McCollum in the primary and then against Democratic candidate Alex Sink.
Alex Sink was endorsed by Floridas major newspapers. Scott was not endorsed by one. Why would he have been? He is a crook. Still he won (oops, bought) the Florida governors race. Heres what the Miami Herald said about the candidates when they endorsed Sink:
Voters who believe elections should be chose on merit have a clear choice in the race for governor. Democrat Alex Sink, the states chief financial officer, stands head and shoulders above Republican Rick Scott in terms of experience, familiarity with issues, and responsiveness to the public.
Mr. Scott, 57, has spent a record $60 million of his own money to promote his candidacy, but the more voters know about him, the more questions there are. He calls himself an outsider whose business savvy will bring efficiency to state government, but it would be a disaster for Florida if he ran the state like he ran Columbia/HCA.
The hospital chain wound up paying $1.7 billion in a massive Medicare fraud scheme that occurred when he was chief executive. He was never charged with wrongdoing, but he walked away with a golden parachute reportedly worth $310 million.
Read the rest of the endorsement.
Maybe some of you remember Rick Scott from his self-funded organization, Conservatives for Patients Rights the group that opposed President Obamas Health Care Plot. Rachel Maddow said of him, Having Rick Scott as your spokesman for health care reform is like having the eColi bacterium as your spokesman against handwashing.
For starts, Scott and the Republican Florida Legislature are poised to ruin public education, remove tenure from teachers, take away bargaining rights from unions that have less than a 50% membership, bring an Arizona-type law to Florida, and expand off-shore oil drilling.
Well, I always wanted to return to my roots in New England
