Former House Majority Leader Tom Delay spent election day in a courtroom. He and two associates,Jim Ellis and John Colyandro, were charged with money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
Allegedly in 2002 they channeled $190,000 in corporate money through Delays Republican PAC to help finance 8 Texas legislative political campaigns. Winning those races would help Delay in his redistricting plot to strengthen the Republican control of Congress. It worked.
If Delay is convicted he could spend the rest of his life in prison. His trial is expected to last three weeks.
From the AP:
DeLay was once one of the most polarizing but powerful Republicans in Congress, earning the nickname the Hammer for his heavy-handed style.
But the criminal charges in Texas, as well as a separate federal investigation of his ties to disgraced former lobbyist Jack Abramoff, finished his 22-year political career representing suburban Houston. The Justice Department has since finished its federal investigation into DeLays ties to Abramoff without filing any charges against DeLay.
A previous charge alleging they and DeLay had engaged in a conspiracy to violate campaign finance laws was dismissed.
Delay was forced to resign in 2006 due to these charges and his involvement in the Abramoff case. His ties to the CNMI, Governor Fitial, Tan and Abramoff are well-known.
Delay says hes been working behind the scenes to rebuild the conservative movement. He appears to be confident that hell walk away from the charges. Id like to see them stick.
