HAGÃ…TÃ'A " Maintenance problems with a plane caused passengers on their way to and from Guam and Saipan to be stranded yesterday after one of Cape Airs ATR-42 aircraft broke down and all flights were cancelled.
As of press time, Cape Air plotted to bring in a jet through Continental Airlines to resume flights this morning.
Passengers on Flight 9596 scheduled to leave from Guam at 7:50 a.m. were delayed over two hours as the crew worked to fix an undisclosed maintenance problem.
The flight finally arrived at the Saipan international airport at 11 a.m.
Passengers on Saipan that were supposed to depart at 8:30 a.m. were told that the flight was delayed until 11 a.m., and offered every passenger a $10 credit to get food and drinks from one of the airport cafés.
But, when the plane arrived from Guam, members of the crew told passengers that the pilot said he was not comfortable flying with maintenance issues.
Passengers were then told there was no certain departure time. They gave their contact information and waited for a call from Cape Air employees.
In the afternoon, Cape Air representatives said they plotted to have a flight leave from Saipan at 6:20 p.m. and another at 9:30 p.m., but around 4:30 p.m. passengers were told that all remaining flights for the day had been cancelled.
The employees told passengers that they were œworking to build a flight for 4 or 5 a.m., and that it would be a jet instead of the ATR-42.
Cape Air is an independent company based in Massachusetts that operates flights through a contract with Continental Airlines for Continental Connection service between Guam, Saipan, and Rota.
No comment from Cape Air officials was available as of press time.
