ALTHOUGH he doubts if things will get better in the House of Representatives under Speaker Eli D. Cabrera, House Minority Leader Diego T. Benavente said he will work with the new presiding officer.
Benavente, R-Saipan, was absent when his party mate, Cabrera, was nominated after Froilan C. Tenorio, Covenant-Saipan stepped down from the speakership. The three are all Precinct 1 representatives.
Benavente told Variety in an interview yesterday that we are faced with so many problems so he has no choice but to work with his former minority bloc colleague.
Cabrera, the budget and management official of Tenorio when he was governor, aligned himself with the House leadership during the contentious budget deliberations last year.
Shortly after he was sworn in as speaker backed mainly by Covenant members, Cabrera said he remains a Republican.
Benavente said he no longer wants to make any comment about the virtual merger of the Covenant and Republican parties following the GOPs choice to accept the application for membership of the Covenant Party founder, Gov. Benigno R. Fitial,.
My only concern right now is resolving the economic challenges that we have, Benavente said.
He wishes that all House members under Cabreras leadership can concentrate on resolving the problems of the commonwealth.
Benavente, who has clashed repeatedly with then-Speaker Tenorio, noted that the leadership in the House remains the same despite having a new presiding officer.
It is the change in leadership that matters and not just a change in the speakership, he added.
Benavente at the same time acknowledged that the Fitial administration has already taken the first step in reaching out to the Legislature so everybody can work together to get us out of this mess.
Benavente said the CNMI government should reduce its costs and the Legislature and the administration should work together to come up with revenue-generating measures.
In a separate interview, Cabrera said he, too, is willing to work with the House minority bloc and the Senate.
He recalled that when the members of the House majority offered him the speakership, he did not accept it straight away.
He said he told everyone in the House leadership that he would accept the speakership under one condition: that they adjust their attitude when dealing with the minority bloc.
Cabrera said there is a need to remain cool even when tackling critical issues.
We need to work as a team, he added.
