Fitial can’t be Republican governor

GOVERNOR Benigno R. Fitial is free to join the Republican Party but he cannot call himself a Republican governor, according to a senior GOP lawmaker.

Rep. Joseph P. Deleon Guerrero of Saipan pointed out that Fitial was the Covenant Party standard bearer when he was elected in 2005 and re-elected in 2009.

Rejoining the GOP will not make the governor its titular head, Deleon Guerrero said.

Thats the way it is even in the Legislature, he added.

œIf you ran as Republican you will be recognized as Republican, if you ran as independent you will be recognized as independent no matter where you align yourself afterward, Deleon Guerrero said.

He added, œTo join the Republican Party you also need to demonstrate your loyalty to the party. Then, after you have proven your loyalty thats the time you can be considered for any party position or title.

Sen. Frank Q. Cruz, R-Tinian, said he has no objection to Fitial re-joining the GOP.

œEverybody is welcome join the Republican Party. The more, the better, he said.

Republican Party official  Mike Kiyoshi agreed.

He said he was surprised to read a news report in which Felipe Q. Atalig claimed to be the interim president of the party.

The new party chairman is John S. Reyes. Kiyoshi said there is no interim president.

Atalig is in favor of œwelcoming back the governor to the GOP.

According to Kiyoshi, œBefore, every time there was somebody on Saipan who wanted to run under the Republican Party, they needed to get a consent from the Tinian Republican leaders who held the original party charter.

But control over the party is now with the leaders on Saipan, he added.
