FORMER Tinian Mayor Jose P. San Nicolas spent $103,356.05 on his travels during his four-year administration.
Of his 51 travels, 15 were off-island, mostly in the Philippines from 2006 to 2009.
This information came from the documents obtained by Kimberlyn King-Hinds through an Open Government Act request.
King-Hinds is the former deputy chief of staff of Tinian Mayor Ramon M. Dela Cruz.
The travel summary in 2006 showed that San Nicolas spent $10,812.85 " $1,665 on tickets; $1,740 per diem; $30 stipend; $7,037.85, official representation; and $350 car rental.
In 2007, his travels cost taxpayers $24,274.70 " $2,550 for tickets; $4,910 per diem; $25 stipend; $16,179.70, official representation; and $610 car rental.
In 2008, his travel expenses reached $44,773 " $4,173.50 for tickets; $4,365 per diem; $35,675 official representation; and $560 car rental.
In 2009, San Nicolas spent $23,495 on travels " $1,913 for tickets; $855 per diem; $25 stipend; $20,042 official representation; and $660 car rental.
An entry dated Aug. 16, 2006 stated that the travel was œto attend HUGE meeting and presentation. It cost $8,166 including $1,655 for tickets, $1,740 per diem, $30 stipend, $7,037.85 official representation, and $350 car rental.
Based on the documents, the then-mayors reasons for traveling to the Philippines varied: œto meet with HWK Environmental Inc., œto meet government officials, œto attend Northern Marianas training on abalone, œto pick up abalone for aquaculture project.
He spent $11,591.50 on the two travels to Philippines œto escort manamko for executive checkup and $5,000 on one travel œto help medical referral patients.
On Dec. 20, 2007, San Nicolas spent $1,209 œto attend TLO Christmas Party.
The documents also showed that San Nicolas traveled to Palau to attend its presidents inauguration and to Korea to meet with officials of Human and Space Company.
He reported nine travels to meet with Gov. Benigno R. Fitial which cost $3,266.
San Nicolass successor, Dela Cruz, was sworn in last Jan. 2009 and has already spent over $34,000 on travels.
