THE Commonwealth Utilities Corp. disconnected the power supply to Tinians government offices, including the mayors office.
CUC Executive Director Abe Utu Malae said the disconnection was carried out on Wednesday due to the unpaid bills of the Tinian municipal government.
The municipality of Tinian was disconnected because the October and November 2010 billings were unpaid, amounting to $59,000, Malae said.
He said the disconnections were originally scheduled for Monday, Jan. 25, 2011.
But, CUC pushed the disconnections back two day so it could contact the agencies and offices that were to be affected and inform them of the disconnections, he added.
We know the need for the services of these agencies and offices, so to minimize disruption of services, we called the affected agencies to inform them of the disconnections so that they could be prepared and most importantly, so they could inform their clients, Malae clarified.
Among the agencies and offices on Tinian whose power supply was disconnected were: Coastal Resource Management, the Department of Labor, the Division of Environmental Quality, the Department of Lands and Natural Resources agricultural shop, the Division of Fish and Wildlife, the Department of Commerce, the Department of Public Works, the farmer-fisherman market of the mayors office, Kammer pavilion 1, Marina, YCC beach, outreach program and the Office of Personnel Management.
The Tinian Health Center was also included but it continued to have power supply as of yesterday morning.
CUC also sent notices to other agencies that were potential for disconnection.
On Wednesday, the Tinian mayors chief of staff Allen Perez said he was informed by a CUC Tinian employee that CUC Saipan would start disconnecting the power of municipal government offices.
The first department that was disconnected was Community and Cultural Affairs, followed by Labor, Lands and Natural Resources, Commerce and the municipal treasury.
Yesterday morning, the Department of Finance and some offices of the mayor were disconnected.
Perez said last week, he was questioned by the governors special assistant for administration Esther Fleming to provide a priority list of essential accounts that shouldnt be disconnected.
Perez said he identified the Department of Public Safety, the Tinian Health Center and the islands street lights as essential.
I also requested that at least one account in each department be kept connected so we can open the offices and provide public service, he added.
In the FY 2011 budget, he said, the municipal government offices are not provided any funding for utilities.
All payments are supposed to be made by the Department of Finance on Saipan, he added.
All we do is receive the billings and request Finance to remit payment. Unfortunately, we do not have any say as to when our utilities are paid, he said.
To reduce utility usage, Mayor Ramon M. Dela Cruz has instructed every department to monitor their power usage on a daily basis and implement cost-saving measures to reduce overall usage, Perez said.
