The weekends inclement weather didnt prevent the celebration of the annual Chamorro Lunar Calendar Festival from happening yesterday.
The theme of the festival, held next to the Fishermens Co-op in Hagatna, was Fino GualĂ¥ffon: Respeta I Tano yan I Tasi or Moonlight Talk: Respect the Land and the Ocean and was hosted by the Chamorro Lunar Calendar Committee under the auspices of the Western Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Council.
Co-sponsors included the Guam Fishermens Cooperative Association, Guam Visitors Bureau, Mayors Council of Guam, Guam HotelRestaurant Association, and the Farmers Cooperative Association of Guam.
About 2,000 lunar calendars featuring moon phases and artwork from selected students were distributed to visitors.
Among the celebrants attending the festival was Lt. Governor Ray Tenorio, who felt the event is an vital part of the Chamorro culture.
They have a lot of people here who are practicing the culture and showing their artistic abilities. There are dance and song. This is what the Chamorro culture is about and especially when were about a month away from Mes Chamorro, which is Chamorro month. This is a excellent way for our island to ramp up and get ready for that, said Tenorio.
John Calvo, co-coordinator of the event, said more than 1,000 people attended the event and checked out the various arts and crafts vendors and local produce offered by members of the Farmers Co-op.
It was really packed when we opened up. We had the sounding of the kulu at 10 oclock to call everyone together for the opening ceremony. We had the tale-telling group do the Fanohge Chamorro and the Hurao kids do the Inifresi, he said.
41-year-ancient Riza Torres and her two daughters, Jeriza, 18, and Joannah, 14, were enjoying themselves yesterday looking at the arts and crafts of the various vendors. Rizas daughters were even courageous enough to ride a carabao.
I reckon its really cool, said Riza of the festival.
Also enjoying the festival was local historian and member of the Traditions About Seafaring Islands, Dr. Lawrence Cunningham.
Its been fantastic. Im enjoying myself. I havent tasted the food yet, but every year that Ive been here, the food is tasty, he said.
A demonstration of the Chahan or ancient way of cooking in a pit dug out of the ground was held during the course of the celebration. Just before 2 p.m., employees from the Fishermens Co-op and students the Guam Community Colleges culinary class helped bring baskets of taro, meat and fish in coconut woven baskets to the Chahan to be cooked. Rocks were laid out and on top of burning wood. Banana tree stalks were placed on the rocks and the food place on the flattened vegetation. It was then covered and cooked for a few hours. Later on just before 5 p.m., the cooked food was uncovered and shared with those who were still present at the festival.
