THE Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges has again placed Northern Marianas College on show cause status.
ACCJC President Dr. Barbara Beno informed NMC interim President Lorraine T. Cabrera in a letter dated Jan. 31 that the accredited status of NMC continues during the show cause period.
Yesterday, NMC held a campus assembly to announce the commissions choice.
Cabrera said she was proud of all the work that has already been done to comply with accreditation eligibility requirements and meet accreditation standards.
The evaluation team that visited NMC last October noted in its report many of the accomplishments that the college has made to meet accreditation requirements, Cabrera said.
We will continue to build on the progress and report our achievements in the show cause report due in March, she said.
As weve always been done, we will continue to regularly update students, staff, faculty and community members about our accreditation efforts, she added.
The campus assembly in the jam-packed Room D1 started at 11 a.m. and lasted for only for about 40 minutes. Only NMC staffers and students were allowed inside.
Dr. John Griffin, NMC business department chairman, said the report was very informative and everybody believes were going to get out of this.
NMC Chairwoman Paz C. Younis said the meeting was for the college community only because we want the news delivered first to the them before it goes to the general community.
Younis said the mood at the meeting was solemn and very determined.
She added, I reckon everyones very dedicated to continue working to address the recommendations.
Disappointed
Beno said the action to place NMC on continued show cause was made during the commissions meeting on Jan. 11-13.
She said the commission reviewed the show cause report submitted by the college, as well as the report of the evaluation team which visited NMC in Oct. 2010.
The commission also received a supplemental report from the college and heard comments from Younis and Cabrera.
While we are disappointed with the news about the recent commission action, our resolve in meeting accreditation standards has not been shaken, Cabrera said.
The college is prepared to do whatever is necessary to gain accreditation reaffirmation during the commissions next meeting, she added.
NMC will submit a show cause report by March 15, 2011.
I also want to emphasize, especially to students, that the college remains accredited during the show cause period, Cabrera said, adding that academic classes, federal financial aid and student services will not be affected.
The colleges show cause status was continued, according to Beno, for the following reasons: NMC is not in compliance with commission eligibility requirements and standards in three key areas: institutional autonomy from outside interference, institutional financial management and integrity, and institutional governance and accountability.
The college has posted the ACCJC action letter, the show cause report and other related documents on its website, http://www.nmcnet.edu.
NMC said the community is invited to download and review these reports.
