* WWII bomb found in construction site
A part of downtown Hagatna was shut down for nearly five hours yesterday after a World War II-era depth charge bomb was found at a construction site.
Leslie Leon Guerrero, spokesperson for Guam Homeland Security/Office of Civil Defense, said the ordnance, which was unearthed in a 6-feet deep ditch, was reported at around 9:15 a.m. on the property of Nanbo Insurance where a contractor is building a new structure.
Personnel from the Navys Explosive Ordnance Disposal team were called to the scene.
Leon Guerrero said the 4-foot long bomb was really 350 lbs., and not between 700 to 1,000 lbs, which was reported earlier in the day. œIt was made to go above ground or underwater, she said.
The EOD members were supposed to remove the fuse at around 1 p.m. but Leon Guerrero said they were delayed pending approval from the Federal Aviation Administration and the Guam International Airport Authority.
œThere are usually a lot of inbound flights, so they had to wait, she said. œThey needed somewhere between eight to 12 minutes for EOD to remove the fuse the bomb. They didnt detonate the bomb, but were removing the fuse to make it safe for transfer.
Businesses and government agencies within a 2,500-foot radius of the bomb site were evacuated, including the DNA building, the Hagatna Swimming Pool, Shirleys Restaurant, the Mobil gas station, Agana Shopping Center, the Agana Library, the Judicial Center and the Academy of Our Lady of Guam.
The Guam Police Department also closed off all traffic to Route 4 from McDonalds to Route 1 Paseo and East OBrien from Agana Pool to West OBrien Julale Center.
The area was given the all-clear just before 2:30 p.m. and the bomb was transported to Naval Magazine for proper disposal.
The discovery of ordnance from World War II is common on Guam.
Last year, the EOD team detonated a 1,000-lb. WWII bomb learned on Naval Base where construction was ongoing next to the facilitys gymnasium.
Residents who come across any type of explosive are strongly advised to contact the proper authorities immediately.
