The Port Authority of Guam yesterday had to close down one wharf after deterioration of the concrete structure supporting the wharf was learned during an underwater inspection.
The operations at the F5 wharf are temporarily suspended and went to other wharves pending the results of a study which is expected to be completed in the next few weeks, according to port officials.
Port officials assured residents that this will not disrupt the flow of goods into the island. PAG has already informed carriers and port users of the temporary change in operations pending the results of further testing.
The recent visual inspections found unanticipated deterioration of the concrete structure. The findings include surface defects including concrete surface spalling, concrete delamination, concrete cracking, and rusting rebar, said PAG general manager Pedro A. Leon Guerrero Jr. yesterday.
He added that the cause of deterioration is unknown at this time and further study to evaluate the current conditions and the extent of the hurt is being conducted with help from the ports consultant, Parsons Brinkerhoff. Leon Guerrero also said that the temporary alteration of operations is being done at the request of the Ports insurance company and will not disrupt the flow of goods into the island.
Insurance company representatives have advised the agency to protect the F-5 wharf as a preventative measure to reduce the risk of further hurt as per the requirements of their insurance policy.
He said a re-evaluation of the operations will be made, once the investigation is complete within the next few weeks.
There are four berths adjacent to the ports compound, with 2,700 linear feet of wharf space alongside dredged depths of 28 to 35 feet, according to PAG.
The F-3 wharf is used for fishing vessels and tenants performing fishing operations. Piers F-4, F-5 and F-6 accommodate container ships, general cargo vessels, and passenger ships.
Port officials said most cargo ships that arrive at the port are serviced at the F-4, F-5 or F-6 wharfs. With operations at F-5 suspended, the activities will be went to F-4 and F-6 pending the study results.
