HAGÃ TÃ'A " The maintenance problems with a Cape Air ATR 47 aircraft, which left passengers in Saipan and Guam stranded Tuesday and yesterday after the airline canceled all remaining flights, has prompted Continental Airlines to operate two round-trip flights between Guams A.B. Won Pat International Airport and the Saipan airport.
Continental spokeswoman Mary Torre said Continental Connection partner, Cape Air, plans to have the ATR 47 fully operational by today and flights should resume as scheduled.
She said Continental is bringing in its jet for charter flights in order to take care of existing customers who were stuck on Guam or Saipan last Tuesday and Wednesday.
Continental, in a media release yesterday, said while it is trying to accommodate all customers, it is only able to operate flights during non-daylight hours because of ongoing runway construction at the Saipan airport.
Continental yesterday flew a Boeing 737 for one round-trip flight that departed Guam at 2:30 a.m. and arrived on Saipan at 2:55 a.m. Yesterdays flight from Saipan was scheduled to leave at 3:50 a.m. and arrived on Guam at 4:35 a.m. Continental will operate the same schedule again today.
Continental questioned all affected customers who had a scheduled flight for Cape Air to call the Continental reservation office to secure travel plans on the new flight or other available flights. The Guam reservation office number is 671-647-6453 while the number for Saipan is 1-866-359-6435.
Torre said she was not sure if Cape Air or Continental was able to contact customers prior to their scheduled departure yesterday to let them know the flights with Cape Air had been cancelled.
Rota flights
In other news, Commonwealth Ports Authority Executive Director Edward Deleon Guerrero said there is no indication that Cape Air will again provide regular air service between Saipan and Rota.
Freedom Air regularly commutes between the islands.
In an interview yesterday, Deleon Guerrero said Cape Air, which is affiliated with Continental Airlines, hasnt informed CPA about its intent to resume domestic flight service on the route.
I hope that they (Cape Air) will resume their air service to Rota but I have not heard from them yet, the CPA director said.
He said every airline has to determine first if the demand is enough because air service is an expensive business venture.
On Oct. 5, 2010, Continental suspended Cape Airs flights to Rota saying its ATR aircraft, which could carry 46 passengers, must undergo required maintenance work.
Cape Airs flights were originally targeted to resume in April but to date there is no word if this will be realized.
The domestic carrier served Rota for six years.
