Donald Flores: Setting himself up for a single term

When I ran for Mayor of Saipan I made three promises.I would (1) clean up the stray dogs, (2) place an end to the ridiculous amounts of travel undertaken by past mayors, and (3) improve on community programs and make new ones.None of the other candidates had a real understanding of what the Mayors Office was supposed to do, so their platforms either promised everything, or as in the case of Marian Tudela, promised nothing.Marians platform centered on the fact that she was a woman.And.That.Was.It.The guy who won, Donald Flores, promised to hire a representative from every village.That never happened.In fact, he did the opposite:He had to let half his staff go.

Id like to reckon that I place a lot of attention on the role of the Mayors Office last year.In the past people might not have cared because the position was usually only sought out by older men who spent their time in office racking up frequent flyer miles.This time around people had an option to elect someone who had really performed the duties of the Mayors Office, albeit as an idealistic environmental volunteer.Electing Donald Flores was like electing Juan Tudela for a third term.Sure, hes done a few cleanups and scraped up a few dogs (I did more cleanups with no money in my spare time as a volunteer), but hes not going to let his projects get in the way of his travel.

So where is Mayor Flores today?Hes in Korea.Im guessing that hes probably promoting tourism.

Donald Flores is on pace to equal or possibly exceed the travel expenses that Juan Tudela pissed away during his 8 years in office.Will the Saipan voters re-elect a travel ambassador in 2014, I wonder?Or do you reckon theyll wise up and really elect a mayor?
