Editors Note: As part of the celebration of Education Month this November, the Saipan Tribune will be featuring the nominees of the different public schools throughout the month. A nine-year educator at the Tinian Elementary School was adjudged as the schools teacher of the year for 2010-2011, setting her up to compete for the CNMI-wide title later this month, along with four others who were selected as the schools outstanding employees in various categories.
Jennifer S. San Nicolas was selected by her peers for the teacher of the year plum after taking the extra responsibility to ensure that her students get the best education from her. She does this by constantly growing professionally to enhance her teaching abilities so that she is able to provide the strategies and skills needed at the different grade levels.
San Nicolas, who joined the Public School System in January 2002 as a fifth grade teacher after completing her degree at the University of Guam, was described as a very committed individual.
She has coordinated and organized many school activities and after-school programs that promote student achievement through extra-curricular activities and tutorials.
She has attended numerous professional development trainings to update herself on the most current, research-proven strategies and skills available.Other awardees
Selected as the schools teacher aide of the year was Teresita U. Sanchez, who has been in the service for about 10 years. Assigned at the schools special education program, she is an expert in sign language and assists students with hearing impairments.
Sanchez obtained an associate degree in Liberal Arts in 2007 along with a certification in Early Childhood Education and Related Service Technician. She has participated in numerous workshops and trainings to enhance her teaching strategies.
Magdalena Sarmiento, the schools administrative staff of the year, was also honored for her dedication to service. Sarmiento joined Tinian Elementary in December 1997 and has been in service for 13 years now.
This is not Sarmientos first time to be recognized. She was nominated support staff of the year in 1999, 2008, and 2009. Sarmiento works well with people and works beyond the required number of hours to meet deadlines and make sure that things are ready for the following school day.
Tinian Elementary also hailed Rodel as this years support staff of the year. He has been with PSS for 19 years now, holding many roles under the maintenance division. He first joined Tinian Elementary in March 1991 as a custodian until he became its building maintenance, driver, trade technician, and then was assigned maintenance supervisor in 2009. He provides a safe and orderly school so that students have a conducive learning environment on Tinian.
Victor Linan, who first joined PSS in February 2002 as a custodian, was recognized as the schools support staff of the year in the pupil transportation category. Prior to becoming a bus driver, he served as the schools building maintenance. He does work beyond what is required of him.
