THE candidate that the governor wanted to lose won by a landslide in Tuesdays congressional delegate election, finishing first in all but one of the CNMIs polling centers.
Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan garnered a total of 4,902 votes while his closest opponent, the ruling Covenant Partys Joseph N. Camacho, received 2,744 only.Former Gov. Juan N. Babauta, a Republican, placed third with 2,049. Babauta has not won an election since his landslide victory in 2001.Finishing last was Democrat Jesus C. Borja, a former lt. governor and associate justice, with 1,707 votes.Voter turnout was around 70 percent.Camacho, a former House floor leader, won most of the controversial early votes: 965, but Sablan placed second with 430.Camacho at this point led by 10 votes but these were quickly obliterated when the results from the villages came in.Sablan also won on Rota and Tinian and received the most absentee votes. He lost in only one village " Camachos hometown of Tanapag " by six votes.Sablan, who cast his vote at past 9 a.m. on Tuesday at Garapan Elementary School, said he did his best for the people of the CNMI. In an interview before the tabulation of the votes, he said: I worked really hard. We never know who will win but of course I am hoping to win, obviously, but if someone else wins, I am willing to support that person.Sablan said he started his day by attending an early morning Mass with his mother. Its my moms 80th birthday, and she voted right before me, Sablan said. His wife Andrea celebrates her birthday today, Wednesday.Assistant Attorney General Meagan Hassel-Shearer said the results will be certified in 15 days. The election commission will count the votes for the three initiatives on Wednesday afternoon.Juan S. Santiago, co-chairman of the Committee-to-Elect Sablan, said their camp did not underestimate the ruling partys mass mobilization of supporters during the early voting period. One of our largest concerns was the early voting, he said. The early voting results did not turn out to be that terrible for Sablan, but. Tenorio congratulated all the four candidates for their professionalism and, on behalf of Sablans camp, he thanked all the voters who supported the re-elected congressman. Former Rep. Alvaro Santos, who represented the Covenant Party during the tabulation of votes at the multi-purpose center, said the confidence was there among his party mates. It appeared, but, that the mindset of the electorate was now different, he added. He noted that this was the first time the CNMI conducted an election under the federal setup. He said they have to strategize better next time.
Peaceful election
Commonwealth Election Commission Executive Director Robert Guerrero said the election was peaceful and they did not encounter any major issues compared to previous elections.Everyone did what they were supposed to do, complying with all the provisions of the election law, he said. One of the minor issues they had was the lack of IDs among those who showed up in some of the polling centers. That, but, was immediately addressed by having them fill out an affidavit, he said.Another concern was brought up by voters at Dandan Elementary School when election workers chose to provide another access to the polling place. The entrance earlier announced, Guerrero said, was the north gate facing the baseball field. But when election workers saw that voters coming from the south were having difficulties, they chose to allow them to use the south gate. Guerrero said they had to clarify this to some of the complaining voters who eventually understood.
