ALL the four congressional candidates are hoping for a clean and honest election today.
The 13 polling places are set to open at 7 a.m., and the Commonwealth Election Commission is urging voters to bring IDs. Voting ends at 7 p.m.
Over 16,000 have registered for the election, and all the votes, including absentee and early voting period ballots, will be tabulated tonight.
The votes for the three initiatives will be counted on Wednesday morning.
These proposed constitutional amendments are H.L.I. 17-1, which will allow the government to float pension obligation bonds for the Retirement Fund; H.L.I. 16-13, to disallow an increase in retirement benefits until the government pays its obligations to the Retirement Fund; and H.L.I. 16-18, to authorize the Department of Public Lands to use 20 percent of its revenue to pay land compensation claims.
Former Rep. Joseph James N. Camacho, the ruling Covenant Partys candidate, said he had done his best to run a clean and honest campaign, refraining from making any negative remarks against any of the other candidates.
He said he made it a matter of campaign policy not to attack candidates.
Camacho encouraged all voters to exercise their right to choose who they reckon will best represent the commonwealth in the U.S. Congress.
Incumbent Congressman Gregorio C. Sablan, an Independent, thanked everyone for working hard to make sure that the CNMI will have an honest election.
But he said there will be those who will try to manipulate the election so we must all be vigilant and unafraid to report any violations we see.
A former election commission executive director, Sablan said CNMI voters must protect the integrity of this election and our self-government by voting.
I encourage everyone to get out and vote, Sablan said.
The Republican candidate, former Gov. Juan N. Babauta, said it is the desire of every candidate to have a clean and honest election. He said he trusts the CNMI election system.
If there are any irregularities in this election, Babauta said he believes it is the responsibility of every citizen to report them promptly.
He would leave it up to the Attorney Generals Office to go after those who violate the election law.
Babauta urged all voters to exercise their right to choose their congressman.
Former Lt. Gov. Jesus C. Borja, the Democratic candidate, said he is hoping that todays election will be honest and honest.
He said voters should be able to cast their ballots free from intimidation and harassment.
He hopes the process will be very clean.
I hope that when the voters go out to vote, there will be no undue influence and intimidation, he said.
His campaign manager, Roy Pangelinan, said everyone should comply with the law to ensure a clean and honest election.
For his part, Press Secretary Angel A. Demapan said the Fitial administration encourages everybody in the community to follow the election law.
According to the law, No person may sell, buy, or dispense any alcoholic beverages or liquor while the polls are open on the day of an election. Any person who knowingly and willfully violates this section shall upon conviction be fined not more than $1,000 or imprisoned for not more than 100 days, or both.
We want to have a safe and smooth election process and we discourage any form of public clamor that would compromise the integrity of the election, Demapan said.
In these challenging times, he added, the CNMI people should take part in the process of selecting their delegate to the U.S. Congress.
He said it is vital for the voters to realize once again that many things can still be done.
The delegate, he added, plays a huge role in bringing solutions to a lot of problems in the commonwealth.
So the administration encourages all registered voters to exercise their fundamental right to vote, as well as those who have not voted yet to come out and cast your vote for the candidate you believe will best serve the commonwealth, Demapan said.
