VICE President Joe Biden wants to see former Commerce Secretary Mike Adas $392,000 contract with the CNMI government.
Congressman Gregorio C. Sablan is asking Gov. Benigno R. Fitial for a copy of the federally funded contract with Adas Integrated Professional Solutions LLC which will be provided to Biden.
In his letter to Fitial yesterday, Sablan said Bidens Recovery Act office has contacted the CNMI congressman, requesting for a copy of the controversial contract.
Bidens office, Sablan said, is also asking about the specific agency account from which the contract is funded as well as the specific funding amounts.
On Tuesday, Sablan wrote Biden a letter asking for advice on how to ensure that any challenge to Adas contract will not result in an interruption in the availability of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds provided to the cash-strapped CNMI government.
Expressing concern about the sole-source contract, Sablan told Biden that the controversy is getting wide media coverage and there seems to be significant public indignation.
He told Biden that Adas company did not have a business license at the time the contract was awarded.
It also worries him that the firm is headed by an individual who was until a few days ago the secretary of the Department of Commerce and the same person that the CNMI government tasked to handle ARRA projects.
Your administration made rigorous efforts to avoid any fraud or abuse in the management and implementation of ARRA funds. You have required unprecedented accountability and transparency in spending through monthly and quarterly reports by agencies and contractors, public postings of information on how funds are spend and the establishment of avenues for reporting fraud or abuse, Sablan told Biden.
I am really looking forward to any investigation from federal officials as I am confident that it will clear up any concerns and silence the critics, Ada said yesterday.
